The vessel
MS Lofoten is a classical passenger ship built in 1964, refitted and refurbished in 2004 and currently operated by Hurtigruten in Norway. The vessel is in operation along the Norwegian coast during the winter months and voyages around the Svalbard Archipelago throughout the summer.
MS Lofoten is the second oldest vessel operated by the company and is as a listed vessel by the Norwegian Director General of Historic Monuments protected to preserve Norway’s cultural heritage.
It is in many ways a floating national monument and with its log-cabin coziness and old-fashioned feel, it could be the most authentic way to experience Norway.

The operator
Hurtigruten is an international travel company specializing in cruises in polar areas. The Hurtigruten fleet consists of 14 ships with eleven operating on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage route at any time.
For more than 115 years Hurtigruten has sailed along the Norwegian coast, linking the north and the south, for decades the most important communication link and the most reliable passage into the remote northern Norway.
The customers/the trade
For decades Hurtigruten has been shuttling not only people but also essential cargo and supplies between seaside communities. In recent years, Hurtigruten has been increasingly turning to tourism, broadening their cruise program and today not only sails the rugged coastal waters of Norway and the Arctic but also the remote lands of Spitsbergen, Greenland and the southern oceans of Antarctica.
