09-01-2008 Smyril Line chooses Frederikshavn

It has now been decided that the Faroese ferry-line “Smyril Line”'s vessel M/V “Norröna” will switch it's Danish base-port from Hanstholm to Frederikshavn during the winter-season. The service calls at the Faroe Islands, Iceland, The Shetland Isles and Bergen in Norway.

 

The first call at Frederikshavn is scheduled for Jan. 12^th 2008, arriving from Bergen, and departing for Torshavn, Faroe Islands

He further states that the port of Esbjerg also had been considered by the ferry-line. A guess is, that the decision to use Frederikshavn is the geography, while the replacing one stormblown North Sea port by another didn't make much sense.

Frederikshavn's position on the east-coast of Jutland, just south of the Skaw means a well-protected approach and port-entrance, which rarely is closed down by the weather.

 

“Norröna” is both a passenger and cargo ship. The passenger part is of a cruise ship standard, so that the time on board becomes a natural part of the travellers' holiday

Passengers have many possibilities to pass the time on board  “Norröna”, which has swimming pool and fitness centre with sunbeds and sauna, and a large and good playroom for the children. There will be a large selection of goods in the shops, which will be approx. three times the size of those on board the present ship. There will be great emphasis on passenger comfort, in order to make sure that all will enjoy a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation. That is why all the passenger areas are situated on the outboard side of the ship with panoramic views, whilst service areas, such as shops, stores, kitchens and pantries are situated inboard on the ship.
