Fredericia Shipyard which is the largest repair yard in Denmark with approximately 400 employees has been forced by town planning to move their activities from their original and age long location on the south east coast of Jutland to the facilities of Lindø Shipyard on the island of Funen. Lindø Shipyard will be closing down permanently when the order book is empty and instead Fredericia Shipyard will move in taking over a part of the existing facilities.

In connection with the move new dock gates are needed and Nicon Industries won the order for three dry dock gates, two of which replace existing dry dock gates whereas the last one is for a new dry dock that is to be built. Nicon Industries A/S has specialized in the manufacturing of large-scale steel and aluminum solutions for the marine and offshore industries and delivers prefabricated superstructures and sections for the ship building industry, customized constructions for offshore installations and smaller steel constructions for contractors and the building sector.

New dock gates are needed before Fredericia Shipyard can commence work on Funen because Lindø originally is a newbuilding shipyard whereas Fredericia Shipyard is a repair yard and repair activities place other demands on the dock areas as well as on the dock gates. According to plan Nicon Industries begin work in January and the project has to be completed in March 2011.

“Nicon Industries has also been affected by the global financial crisis, but with the order from Fredericia Shipyard we are hopeful about the future. It forms a solid foundation for 2010 and secures the jobs of at least 20 employees”, says director Anders Hecht-Pedersen. “In the long term this project will also serve as a good reference showing potential customers that we are capable of successfully handling projects of this size.”
