28-10-2009 Ships of OCTOBER

The VLCC's (Very Large Crude Carriers) are the "M/V Hormoz" and the "M/V Mazyonah", performing STS operation off Frederikshavn.
The ships are both mothervessels for standard STS operations, however due to various reasons it was necessary to perform an STS operation between these two large vessels. This was the largest STS operation ever performed in Danish waters and required exceptional cooperation between Agents, pilots, towage company and STS provider. The vessels had to lie idle for a few days awaiting a proper weather window. This materialized on the 09 of October in the afternoon.

Coordinator of the operation is Maersk Broker Agency, STS team. Please see www.maerskbrokeragency.com.

The vessels:
Mazyonah is a VLCC built in 2009 in Korea.

Length                                            334 meters
Breadth                                          58 meters
Draught                                          22.5 meters
Gross tonnage                            163257

Hormoz is a VLCC built in 2008 in Korea.

Length                                            330 meters
Breadth                                          60 meters
Draught                                          22.5 meters

All good forces were put together and the operation was performed smoothly and safely as always, thanks to professional cooperation between Maersk Broker Agency and all the involved parties.

The reasons for performing STS operations are many, but generally this is performed on vessels which have to deep a draft to pass through the Great Belt. By filling the VLCC´s for the long haulages rather than sailing with the smaller vessels, we reduce the fuel consumption per transported ton and thus reducing the carbon footprint for the cargo.

While at the anchorage the vessels requires a long range of services, among others Crew changes, provisions, diving assistance surveys repairs etc.
