29-03-2010 Ship of the month March 2010 - Bastø 1
The ship of the month, M/F Bastø 1, is in dock at Orskov Yard A/S in Frederikshavn. At Orskov, the vessel will have a service check and undergo general maintenance getting ready for a busy Easter on the Oslo Fjord. Engine and gears, safety equipment and access ramps will be given a complete overhaul and the exterior will be freshened up with new paint. During this years’ harsh winter, the vessel has been stuck in the ice several times damaging structures and components below the waterline and necessitating a renovation of among others the propellers. Orskov Yard A/S repairs and converts all kinds of vessels up to 215 x 34 meters. Visit www.orskov.dk for further information.

The operator
M/F Bastø I and its two sister ships are operated by the shipping company Bastø Fosen AS, a subsidiary of Fosen Trafikklag. Bastø Fosen received concession to operate ferries on the Moss-Horten route from 1995, after the former company Gokstad did not offer as good a deal for the authorities. In a transitions period until the new ferries Bastø I and Bastø II were delivered in 1997, the shipping company rented the older ferries Einar Tambarskjelve and Holger Stjernfor the route. After the new ferries were delivered, traffic increased from 600,000 cars in 1996 to 1.4 million cars in 2004. In 2003 Bastø Fosen received concession for operations until 2015.
The customers/the trade
The three Bastø ferries operating between Moss and Horten carry no less than 2.5 million passengers and approximately 1.3 million cars annually. In 2008 the line had a daily ridership of 3720 people and 4086 vehicles. The crossing is 10.5 kilometers, it takes 30 minutes, and the ferries provide two departures per hour throughout the day.
