04-05-2010 Ship of the Month - May 2010 - M/V WIND

M/V WIND is a jack-up crane vessel designed specifically for service and maintenance of offshore wind farms.

The ship of the month, M/V Wind, is in dock at Orskov Yard A/S (www.orskov.dk ) in Frederikshavn. The vessel is at Orskov for a large conversion, upgrading and general maintenance. In cooperation with other Maritime Network partners, Scanel International A/S (www.scanel.dk ), Norisol A/S (www.norisol.dk) and Nicon Industries A/S  (www.nicon-industries.com ), the conversions include among others:
  • Lengthening of the jack-up legs with 11 m
  • Diesel electric with new engines
  • DP system
  • New Liebherr crane (the world’s biggest hydraulic crane)
  • New bridge and accommodation
  • New retractable azimuth thruster
  • The hydraulic jacking system has been renewed to a much faster system.
Orskov Yard A/S repairs and converts all kinds of vessels up to 215 x 34 meters. Visit www.orskov.dk for further information.
The vessel
M/V WIND is a jack-up crane vessel designed specifically for service and maintenance of offshore wind farms. The jack-up vessel is designed to withstand harsh weather and wind conditions and features a crane for handling and transporting wind turbine elements.
The vessel’s jack-up legs have been elongated and now extend to a length of 56 meters from the bottom of the ship and penetrating into the seabed. When the legs are pushed down, the ship is lifted above the waves providing a stable “ground” where there is only roiling water and thereby enabling engineers and technicians to carry out their specific tasks.
Wind farms are to a greater extent being established in deeper waters and this has necessitated the elongation of the jack-up legs on M/V WIND.

The operator
M/V WIND is owned and operated by the Danish company DBB Jack-up Service (www.dbbsalvage.dk ) – a sister company to Danish Salvage and Towing Company Ltd. The company’s other business areas include heavy lift, salvage, tugboat services and ROV operations.
The customers/the trade
DBB Jack-up Service provides first class services and equipment to the offshore wind industry focusing primarily on maintenance of offshore wind turbines and wind farms. As the demand for clean power generation to meet the world’s growing energy need increases, the development of offshore wind farms take place at a fast pace. And this may mean that we will see more massive jack-up vessels patrolling the waters in the years to come.
